Why is dialogue critical to academic success?
All learning takes place in one of two ways; the conversations we have with others or the conversations we have with ourselves. The young build thinking and speaking skills through dialogue with others. Reading, for instance, is engaging in a conversation with an author. What we talk and think about with others determines what we can talk and think about within ourselves.
Do children have enough in-depth, one-on-one dialogue?
The structure of education makes it impossible for a teacher to engage in sustained conversation with an individual student. Families often don't have time, or don't realize the importance of, thought-provoking, interactive discussion. Many children spend large chunks of time with television and solitary computer games. Imagine the value of having a volunteer mentor dialogue and create with a student every week!
How can teachers plan for, train and supervise volunteers?
With great difficulty! Teachers cannot leave the classroom to provide supervision and support. These tasks just don't fit into an already time-starved day. This is especially true in schools with many children in need of academic support. Teachers are already stretched to the limit.

How does the Reading Wings ™ Volunteer
Mentorship
Kit help to meet these needs?
AN INCREDIBLE GIFT!
The READING WINGS ™ VOLUNTEER MENTORSHIP KIT contains all the tools and information needed to operate the program. Detailed workshop instructions, led by a video, enable a parent or volunteer to train other volunteers. Black-line masters eliminate the need to purchase more materials.
